Part of Salzburg Global's Peace & Justice Pillar

Our Purpose

The Japan-India Transformative Technology Network connects and empowers outstanding change-makers in two countries at the forefront of technological progress in Asia – India and Japan.

The program offers a platform for those working towards social good to maximize the benefits of various forms of new technologies (including, but not limited to, artificial intelligence, robotics and automation, blockchain, and fintech).

Why It Matters

Resolving our most pressing social challenges will require new ways of thinking and acting, moving beyond traditional mechanisms to embrace new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomous systems, and blockchain and financial innovations.

Through online and in-person collaboration, selected Fellows are building a dynamic cross-sector network of outstanding change-makers to apply these powerful tools to the challenges of improving health and healthcare, expanding social inclusion, and enriching life in urban and rural communities.

Through this program, we aim to:

Enhance Cross-Cultural Understanding

Facilitate deep collaboration between Japanese and Indian Fellows to foster mutual respect and appreciation.

Promote Innovative Solutions to Common Challenges

Explore and develop innovative technological solutions to address pressing social challenges in both countries.

Form Project Teams and Create Actionable Plans

Encourage Fellows to form teams and develop concrete project plans that leverage technology to achieve social good.

Build a Network of Leaders

Create a robust network of leaders who are committed to leveraging transformative technologies for social good.

Our Approach

This program will bring together participants from the following fields:

  • Research and Development: academic and corporate researchers, private and government researchers, financers, and design specialists (products, places, policies);
  • Public Policy and Strategic Planning: national and municipal policy-makers, journalists, thought-leaders, educators, business strategists, and civil society activists and advocates;
  • Implementation and Commercialization: practitioners and technical specialists from technology, business, finance, and social entrepreneurial sectors.

Our Format

The Network is designed to generate catalytic, scalable impact by applying technological innovation to products, processes, policy-making, organizational practices, and financing.

To date, the program has focused on areas of rapid technological development and on how these technological innovations can drive transformations across three interrelated challenge areas: social inclusion, livable communities, and health systems.

The Network considers the immediate challenges facing Japan and India, as well as the issues that will be most urgent for future generations.

The Network comprises four cohorts. Regular online workshops allow Fellows to gain a broader, deeper understanding of the three social challenges and to build the foundations for collaboration on solutions.

Fellows work in small teams to design projects that take the power of technology and apply it to one of the three social challenge areas. We have also held acceleration programs for project teams in Asia.

Our Challenge Areas

To maximize the potential of technology, we need agility, innovation, and collaboration.

By focusing on innovative applications of artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous systems, blockchain, financial innovation, and other technologies across these interconnected areas related to human and planetary health, the Japan-India Transformative Technology Network will leverage interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration to spur new solutions and encourage partnerships.

These three challenge areas are ripe for disruptions from new technologies, partnerships, and innovations that can deliver benefits relevant for Japan, India, and the world as a whole.

Accessibility, Mobility, and Inclusion

Recent advances in technology have made available information, products, services, and markets to the elderly, disabled, and other disadvantaged groups.

Can further advances help create equitable societies in which everyone can participate fully?

Furthermore, what possibilities does technology offer to enhance the population's existing abilities and overcome individuals' specific access challenges?

Health Systems

Healthcare systems around the world are under increased pressure to deliver high-quality, efficient care to growing and ageing populations, with limited and often strained resources.

How can new technologies help address the expanding needs of transforming populations while also meeting the growing demand for customized and personal care?

What are the concrete, immediate, and long-term challenges that can be solved?

Living and Livable Communities

Smart cities promise greatly increased efficiency and connectedness in urban environments.

Can these technologies help the world's most rapidly urbanizing countries ensure their cities achieve carbon neutrality while tackling systemic inequality and providing quality housing, clean air and water, and efficient, effective transport solutions?
