Education Retreat: Education for Human Flourishing
At a time when populism and isolationism are on the rise in many parts of the world, international collaboration feels more important than ever before. Funding for, and spending on, education has changed significantly in the five years since the COVID pandemic, often making international collaboration harder. This inaugural education retreat at Salzburg Global is specifically designed to help catalyze new international collaboration within the education sector. Taking the broad theme of Education for Human Flourishing, the retreat will bring together representatives from approximately 30 organizations who are interested in developing new ideas around collaboration and allyship to advance education for human flourishing in the run-up to the UN General Assembly in September 2027.
Salzburg Global’s Center for Education Transformation is part of several collaborative initiatives, including Education House, and the Education for Human Flourishing Coalition (with Cambridge Partnership for Education, HundrED, International Baccalaureate, Learning Planet Institute, OECD, and Teach For All). This retreat has been inspired by these very positive experiences and a belief that greater sectoral collaboration, between and within institutions and systems, is critical for the century ahead.

Program Overview
With less than five years remaining on the 2030 SDGS, we lack accessible and regular cross-sectoral spaces to collectively explore how we prepare young people for the interconnected challenges of our times. The retreat is timed so participants can identify opportunities for the education sector to speak and act in a more co-ordinated manner over the year ahead.
With SDG4 under review in 2027, now is the moment to ensure education is no longer sidelined from the cross-sector decisions, partnerships, and investments shaping the post-2030 sustainable development agenda.
This highly interactive program will bring together approximately 40 participants from diverse education contexts for two online co-design and development sessions in October and then a two and a half-day residential program at Schloss Leopoldskron from 1 – 4 November.
The program will finish in the evening of 3 November, and participants are welcome to stay on for the International Forum on Global Citizenship Education, Partnerships and Peace organized in partnership with the Ban Ki-moon Center for Global Citizenship and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. There is no cost to attend the Forum, but any additional nights’ accommodation is at participants’ own expense.
Following the program, there will be ongoing opportunities to continue collaboration through a series of post-Salzburg online meetings.
Student and youth leaders, representatives of organisations already working in human flourishing aligned initiatives (such as education and peacebuilding, social and emotional learning, foundational literacy and numeracy, global citizenship or AI), policymakers, academics, specialists working outside of education who see opportunities for allyship around this topic.

As defined by the OECD, Education for Human Flourishing is an evolving global framework that redefines the purpose of schooling beyond academic testing and workforce readiness. It holistically nurtures intellectual, emotional, and ethical capacities, aiming to equip young people to lead meaningful lives, find purpose, and build sustainable, equitable societies.
