Media Academy Alumni Spotlight on 'Beyond the West: Field notes on Local Journalism and Democracy in the Philippines'

As the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change welcomes its 2025 cohort, this interactive 120-minute onboarding session weaves together personal stories, practical guidance, and community-building to kickstart the journey.

The session opens with an Alumni Spotlight & Thematic Curtain Raiser featuring two past participants — Tim (Class of 2022) and Jason (Class of 2024) — who will reflect on their experiences working in the Philippines at the intersection of local journalism and democracy. Their presentations will showcase non-Western perspectives that speak directly to this year’s Academy theme.

We’ll then shift into a comprehensive orientation with program & design leads, covering pre-Academy expectations, travel and logistics, and time for participant questions. In the final segment, graduate track participants will remain for a focused briefing on their additional roles, responsibilities, and preparatory work.

This session sets the tone for a collaborative and purposeful Academy experience — honoring where we’ve been, and preparing for where we’re going.
