Measuring Climate Literacy: The Future of PISA

Greening School Grounds Community of Practice Monthly Meeting

Invited Guests: Mario Piacentini, Elvire Jegu, and Yuri Belfali

The OECD is developing a PISA Climate Literacy Framework to measure 15-year-old students' ability to understand, evaluate, and act on climate change challenges. Climate Literacy covers a mix of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, with a focus on interdisciplinary knowledge, systems thinking, and action-oriented agency.

The future cycles of PISA will cover four key competencies:

  1. Understanding human-induced climate change
  2. Applying evidence-based reasoning
  3. Evaluating perspectives
  4. Exercising agency for climate futures will include test items within science, reading, and mathematics domains, alongside questionnaires for students and teachers.

In addition to the test for 15-year-olds, the OECD aims to create a repository of learning materials for both primary and secondary education that align with the framework.

We will be joined by Mario Piacentini and Elvire Jegu, who lead the work on climate literacy, and Yuri Belfali, the head of division for Early Childhood and Schools, for a presentation and then a discussion.
