Bill is Professor of Cybernetics-Systemics in the new School of Cybernetics at the Australian National University (since 2022), where he is providing strategic guidance, conducting research, and fostering critical connections to establish SoCy as a leading center for navigating major societal-technological transformations and building a better global world. Prior to joining ANU, Bill spent his 50-year career as a professor-practitioner based in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC. In addition to serving as a faculty member at San José State University, he has held secondary academic appointments at a dozen leading universities in the USA-Europe-Australia and major professional appointments at several research institutes in the USA. He has also served as faculty chair of the Salzburg Global Seminar's Global Citizenship Program (2005-2015). A key part of his current research is focusing on a cybernetic-systemic approach to the nature, evolution, and tensions between freedom and authoritarianism in a complex global world. Bill is a Fellow of Salzburg Global Seminar.
