Viktor is Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, where his research explores the role of information in the networked economy. A former faculty member at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, he is a globally recognized expert on the information society and advises governments, international organizations, and companies on digital governance and policy. Viktor has authored eleven books, including the international bestsellers Big Data and Learning with Big Data (co-authored with Kenneth Cukier), and the award-winning Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age. His work has been translated into over 20 languages and widely featured in global media. A pioneer in data security, he founded Ikarus Software in 1986 and developed Austria's best-selling software product at the time. He studied in Salzburg, Harvard, and the London School of Economics, and has received numerous honors including the World Technology Award in Law. Viktor serves on the boards of several organizations advancing research and policy on the digital economy. He is a Salzburg Global Fellow.
