Valerie Wirtschafter is a Fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution and a leading voice in the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative. (1) democratic resilience and democratic erosion; and (2) artificial intelligence, technology, and the information space, often with a regional focus on the Western Hemisphere. With a data-driven approach, she explores the impact of algorithms, AI-generated content, and foreign influence operations across digital platforms. Her work has influenced both academic discourse and tech policy, and has been featured in major outlets including The New York Times, Washington Post, and PBS NewsHour. Valerie also leads Brookings’s internal adoption of emerging technologies and co-authored its guiding principles on generative AI. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from UCLA and has taught on international politics in the digital age.
