Theresa Senft

Senior Lecturer, Macquarie University, Australia
Theresa is a senior lecturer in Digital Media Studies at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Much of her work centers on how social media platforms are shifting individual and collective ideas about identity, intimacy, trust, risk, and confidence through user practices like image, video, livestreaming, meme and challenge sharing; business models that treat user emotion/engagement as 'the new oil'; and personalization algorithms capable of yielding ad hoc publics with little common ground beyond momentary shared taste in a viral joke or shopping preference. For the past four years, she has been consulting for World Health Organization (WHO) and US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) helping them better understand how young people use digital culture for emotional expression, information exchange, misinformation management, message spreading and behavior uptake.
