Susan Benesch

Founding director
Susan Benesch directs the Dangerous Speech Project, an independent research team focused on forms of expression that inspire intergroup violence, and on methods to prevent such violence without infringing on freedom of expression. Before founding the DSP a decade ago, Susan worked as a war reporter and then as an international human rights lawyer, drawing ideas from both fields. She frequently critiques and advises technology companies on speech governance and has attempted collaborative research with them, co-founding the Coalition on Independent Technology Research as a result. She publishes widely in both academic and mainstream journals and holds a B.A. from Columbia University and law degrees from Yale and Georgetown Universities. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at American University and a Faculty Associate of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Susan is a Salzburg Global Fellow.
