Steven Wilkinson is a political scientist at Yale University, who specializes in the study of South Asia, political violence, ethnic relations, democracy and civil military relations. His research focuses on violence and war, especially in South Asia. His book, Votes and Violence: electoral competition and ethnic riots in India, examines the political roots of communal conflict in South Asia. His edited book with Herbert Kitschelt, Patterns of Political Accountability and Competition is a leading text in the study of political corruption and clientelism. He is now working with co-author Saumitra Jha (Stanford GSB) on a book on War and Political Change, the first part of which, on the role of veterans in ethnic cleansing during the partition of India, was published in 2012 in the American Political Science Review. The next part of this project looks at the role of veterans in the French Revolution. In addition to looking at patterns of violence, he is also interested in civil military relations. His 2015 book Army and Nation examines India's success in managing the imbalanced colonial army it inherited in 1947. He holds a M.A. (Hons,) in history from the University of Edinburgh, an M.A. in history from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
