Steven Bach (Chair) is adjunct associate professor, Department of the Arts, at Columbia University in New York, and teaches film studies at Bennington College in Vermont. He was previously a theatrical and film producer before heading worldwide production at United Artists, where he was involved in such films as Raging Bull, Manhattan, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, La Cage aux Folles, and Heaven’s Gate, about which he wrote the best-seller Final Cut: Dreams and Disaster in the Making of Heaven’s Gate. Mr. Bach was senior vice president and head of worldwide production for United Artists at the time of the filming of Heaven’s Gate. The film has proven to be one of the most controversial motion pictures produced in Hollywood, and is credited with having brought down United Artists, the film studio founded in 1919. Mr. Bach has published numerous screenplays, as well as articles, and reviews. He is also the author of several books, including Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend and Dazzler: The Life and Times of Moss Hart. Mr. Bach is currently working on a book about Leni Riefenstahl. He earned an M.A. from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
