Program Lead, Open Society Fellowship, USA
Stephen Hubbell heads the Open Society Fellowship Program, based in New York. Over the past year, inspired by Ideas Workshop’s mission to foster critical debate, he developed the seven-cities fellowship concept, chose the cities, and with the team, organized the recruitment and selection process. From 2022-23, he launched a fellowship focused on the Indian diaspora in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe, and created a commission of inquiry to investigate inter-ethnic violence in the British city of Leicester in 2022. Previously, he worked for over two decades as a journalist and editor, serving as Senior Editor of Harper’s Magazine, Middle East correspondent for The Nation, and Senior Editor at Metropolitan Books.
