Stephen Hsu is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University. He served as the Vice-President for Research at Michigan State University from 2012 to 2020. He held professorships at Yale, Oregon and MSU. Stephen's research interests include quantum field theory, black holes, cosmology, quantum foundations, AI/ML, and computational genomics. In addition to his academic work, Stephen's writing can be found on Substack, and he co-hosts a podcast, Manifold. Stephen is also a founder of several startups, including SafeWeb (encryption & internet security; acquired by Symantec), Genomic Prediction (DNA embryo screening for IVF), Othram (solving crimes via forensic DNA and genetic genealogy), and SuperFocus.ai (AI for Enterprise: Reliable AIs built using LLMs, but with no hallucination). Stephen holds a BS from Caltec and a PhD from UC Berkeley. He was also a Harvard Junior Fellow.
