Sonja Biserko

Founder and President, The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, Serbia

Sonja Biserko is the founder and president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia. She was appointed a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 2013. She served as a diplomat for the former Yugoslavia in London and at the United Nations in Geneva for over 20 years until 1991. In 1994, she founded the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia (HCHRS). Ms. Biserko has worked on a variety of civil and human rights programs and has participated in a number of international conferences focused on regional crises and conflicts. She is the author of some 40 publications, including notably “Serbia in the Orient”. She holds a degree from the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Economics., Reading and Stellenbosch universities.
