Monirah Hashemi co-founded Simorgh Film Association of Culture and Art in Herat in 2005. A year later she established Simorgh Theater. In 2006, she wrote her first play Cry of History, for the first Educational Theatre Festival in Herat. The play, which was produced only by women, received the best play award. As an actor, director and playwright, Monirah had a particular focus on creating productions led by women. Her theatre credits as a writer and director include Letter of Suffering, Salsaal and Shamaama, Stones and Mirrors, Flute Sonance, which were performed at festivals in Kabul and India and Turkey. Masks Under the Burka was performed at the Women Playwright International Conference in Stockholm in 2012. Using forum theatre techniques, Simorgh artists promoted and advocated for human rights at the grassroots level. They have performed in various venues such as schools, for police officers, men's and women's prisons, juvenile detention centers and in people's homes. In March 2013, Monirah co-founded A Night with Buddha Festival in Afghanistan, marking the destruction of the world's two largest Buddha statues by the Taliban. Monirah lives in Sweden and works with Theater DOS where plays Sitaraha - The Stars and Who Lights the Stars? has been produced.
