Mae Henderson

Mae G. HENDERSON is a literary critic and professor of African American literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. Her research interests include early archival and historical work on nineteenth century black and reform newspapers, literary and cultural studies of the Harlem Renaissance and today, and African American feminist cultural and literary studies. Her current project on Josephine Baker continues her research interests, amplified by a concern with issues of gender, race, and performativity refracted through late nineteenth and early twentieth century French colonialism, ethnography, and transatlantic modernism. From 1991 to 1995, Professor Henderson served as associate professor in the department of English and African American studies at the University of Illinois. Prior to that, she was associate professor in the Department of English and African American world studies at the University of Iowa. Professor Henderson serves as a consultant on African American studies and chair of the Women's Studies in Language and Literature program of the Modern Language Association. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in American studies from Yale University, Connecticut.
