Jin Shern (James) Chai is a visiting fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, a Singapore-based regional research center focused on Southeast Asian socio-political, security, and economic trends. He is also an author at Penguin Random House, where he wrote about underdogs, and a columnist on Southeast Asia. James writes a weekly newsletter, “Progress Papers”, on Substack. Previously, James was a policy advisor to the Minister of Economy in Malaysia. He is an AI governance Fellow with ERA:AI in Cambridge, UK. James graduated from the University of Oxford, UK, and Queen Mary University of London, UK.
