Janet worked as a civil servant in the UK government for thirty years, for the last ten years of which she worked for the UK Ministers for Women, initially as Head of Gender Mainstreaming with a remit across all UK Government ministries, and then as Director of the UK Women's National Commission, advising ministers across the UK government on gender sensitive policy. Janet now works as an independent gender expert. She was a researcher for the late Baroness Haleh Afshar in the UK Parliament between 2007-2022, a member of the Parliamentary Advisory group on Sexual Harassment, and adviser on a new gender mainstreaming initiative in the UK Parliamentary Scrutiny Unit, which provides specialist expertise to parliamentary committees. She has been a specialist adviser to the UK Parliamentary Committee on Women and Equalities. She is a gender expert with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, an agency of the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, training Parliamentarians, civil servants and civil society organisations in gender mainstreaming and gender responsive budgeting in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia. She has supported Rape Crisis England and Wales since 2007 in developing their policy positions. Janet is a founder member of the UK End Violence Against Coalition, an umbrella organisation for the violence against women and girls sector in the UK, she was vice-chair of Equally Ours, a UK wide human rights umbrella group, and is currently Chair of the UK Women's Budget Group, which publishes gendered analysis of the UK economy. She was awarded the OBE for services to women's rights in 2011.
