Ian Mostert is Project Leader for Child and Nature at IVN Nature Education in the Netherlands. With a background in youth health care, he understands the vital role of physical and mental space in child development, especially in urban environments. In 2014, he introduced the concept of green-blue schoolyards in Rotterdam-natural, climate-adaptive outdoor spaces that support play, learning, and biodiversity. These schoolyards not only benefit children but also serve as community hubs, accessible outside school hours to promote neighborhood engagement and cohesion. Ian has led the development of many such spaces in Rotterdam and is now working to scale this approach into a national movement. By integrating education, sustainability, and social connection, his work empowers children and communities to build a stronger relationship with their environment. Ian's vision is a future where nature-rich, inclusive schoolyards are the standard across the country-supporting both healthy development and climate resilience.
