Professor, Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden

Hanne Fjelde is a professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University. Her research examines the relationship between democratic institutions and political violence. Drawing on survey data, experiments, and disaggregated observational data, she studies how political violence emerges around political elections and how it shapes citizens' attitudes toward democracy and the rule of law. She conducts research in Nigeria, India, Colombia, the UK, and the US, focusing on the drivers of violence against voters, political candidates, and democratic representatives, and the consequences of such violence for democratic representation, equality, and citizens' commitments to liberal principles.
