Shakespeare Retreat

You are warmly invited to join us at Salzburg Global’s first Shakespeare Retreat, in partnership with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust - an opportunity to join experts, actors and directors in exploring the literary, dramatic, social, and psychological aspects of Shakespeare’s work in the magical surroundings of Schloss Leopoldskron and its park. We will be taking one play as a particular focus: A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

This retreat will build on the legacy of the great theatre and movie director, Max Reinhardt who founded the Salzburg Festival, and whose home and creative center of the Festival from 1918 to 1938 was Schloss Leopoldskron.  Reinhardt was a devoted Shakespearian, directing the Hollywood version of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1935 and building a garden theatre in the Schlosspark where he staged Twelfth Night.

The program will include a series of reflections from our guest speakers, film screenings, breakout groups, readings, and panel discussions. There will also be time for enjoying the state rooms at the Schloss, strolls in the park or around the lake, and a guided walk to Salzburg, with an additional opportunity to attend a private piano concert at Mozart’s Birthhouse.

This will be a retreat open to all, an occasion for those who love theatre and language to explore the world of Shakespeare together.

Guest speakers:

  • Debra-Ann Byrd - producer, actor, writer, and Founding Artistic Director of the Harlem Shakespeare Festival
  • Sir Greg Doran - Artistic Director, the Royal Shakespeare Company (2012-2022)
  • Revd. Dr Paul Edmondson - Shakespearian and Local Studies Specialist, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust
  • Tim FitzHigham - The Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham; multi-award winning comedian, explorer, presenter, and author
  • Professor Carol Rutter – University of Warwick; Renaissance theatre historian and specialist in Shakespeare performance studies
  • Dame Janet Suzman – Academy Award nominated actor and director

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is the charity responsible for caring for the world’s most important Shakespeare heritage sites in Stratford-upon-Avon, including Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Hall’s Croft, Shakespeare’s New Place, and Mary Arden’s Farm. Through its internationally recognised collections, exhibitions, learning programmes, and events, it shares the story of Shakespeare’s life, works, and continuing influence with millions of people around the world.

It brings everyone together through Shakespeare to experience and spark conversations around his work, life, and times today.

As custodians of his family homes and stewards of one of the world’s most significant literary archives, the Shakespeare Birthplace Truat relies on the generous support of trusts, businesses, and individuals to help us care for these historic places, conserve the collections, and ensure Shakespeare’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
