Wolfdieter v. Hesler is a lawyer and inhouse counsel in the legal department of Westenergie AG in Essen, Germany. After studying in Erlangen and Aix-en-Provence, he initially worked as a consultant at the Vereinigung Deutscher Elektrizitätswerke - VDEW - e.V. (Association of German Electricity utilities) and in 1987 changed to the legal department of NUKEM GmbH as legal advisor for the nuclear sector. In 1991 he took over the development and management of the legal department of Mitteldeutsche Energieversorgung Aktiengesellschaft in Halle (Saale). In 2003 he changed to the legal department of RWE Energy AG, later RWE AG and innogy SE. Today he is responsible for the section energy law and regulatory law at Westenergie AG. Wolfdieter is deputy chairman of the specialist committee for renewable energy law and the law concerning combined cycle energy production as well as a member of the specialist committee for heat supply and contracting of the BDEW - Federal Association of Energy and Water Supply Companies e.V., Berlin. He is the author of numerous publications on energy law, e.g. his article on the "Integration of storage systems and their privileges within the framework of network charges and the EEG surcharge" appeared in Jörg Böttcher / Peter Nagel (editors) Battery storage: Legal, technical and economic framework, de Gruyter, 2018. He was co-editor of the Practice Commentary EEG 2014 (Ed. Gabler / v. Hesler), where he commented on the regulations on biomass. Most recently, in Baumann / Gabler / Günther Handkommentar on the EEG (law concerning renewable energy), he is responsible for "other gases" in addition to special and transitional regulations on biomass. Wolfdieter is a Fellow of Salzburg Global Seminar.
