Dr. Oberender studied theatre science at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1988 to 1993 and from 1991 to 1995 play writing at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. Since 1995, he has worked as a dramatist, essayist and journalist for the Tagesspiegel, Die Zeit, Frankfurter Rundschau, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and various radio stations. His first play, Steinwald's, was awarded the prize of the Frankfurt Authors Foundation in 1993. The world premiere of the play 100 Fragen an Heiner Müller. Eine Séance, which he wrote together with Moritz von Uslar, took place recently at the Berlin Ensemble directed by Philip Tiedemann. In 1997, Dr. Oberender was the co-founder of the Berlin Authors' Theatre which he named Theater Neuen Typs (TNT) A New Type of Theatre. Linked to this was the festival Achtung: Gegenwart and first performances of plays by young German dramatists took place regularly at the Renaissance Theatre in Berlin. Since 1998 Oberender has frequently directed workshops (for instance at the Goethe Institute, the Berlin Festival) and lectured at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin and at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1999, he completed his doctoral studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin, graduating with a Ph.D. From 2000 to 2005, he was executive dramaturge and member of the board of directors at the Schauspielhaus Bochum. For the Ruhr Triennial Dr. Oberender devised and directed the literary series Die Wiedererrichtung des Himmels in 2004 and Die Schule der Romantik in 2005. In the 2005/06 season he was co-director at the Schauspielhaus Zurich and from 2007 he has been responsible for the drama programme of the Salzburg Festival. . website
