Svein Andresen is the secretary general of the Financial Stability Board at the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland. Prior to this he held various positions at BIS. He was advisor to the general manager of the BIS from 1997 to 2000. From 1995 through 1997, he lead the secretariat to G10 central bank Governors on financial issues. He was secretary to the Committee on the Global Financial System from 1992 till 1997 and to the Markets Committee from 1995 till 1997. He joined the BIS Monetary and Economic Department in 1989. Prior to joining the BIS, Dr. Andresen was an assistant professor of economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received an M.A. in economics from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.
