Chief Executive Advisor to the Governor
Shinichi Ueyama is chief executive advisor to the governor of Tokyo. He also worked as executive adviser to the governors of Osaka and Aichi and to the mayors of Osaka and Niigata. He is also a professor of public management at Keio University in Tokyo. Previously, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey's Tokyo office for 14 years (1986 to 2000) mainly for corporate strategy and change management at airline, steel, chemical, machinery, publishing, and public sectors. After McKinsey, he taught at Georgetown University as a visiting professor from 2000 to 2003. From 2004, he initiated management reform and privatization of infrastructure for Japanese local governments by using McKinsey's problem-solving approach while working as a member of reform committees at Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLITT), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of Coordination. He is currently a chairman of the Policy Evaluation Committee of MLITT. He published 20 books on public policy and government reform in Japan (two books are translated into Korean). Mr. Ueyama enjoys Japanese archery, cooking, trekking and travel. He has visited 111 countries. He holds a Bachelor of Law from Kyoto University and a Master of Public and International Affairs from Princeton University.
