Student, University of Toronto, Canada
Renee Jagdeo is a second year student at the University of Toronto studying human and environmental geography, passionate about reclaiming the right to, and sustaining commons. With a specialization in urban planning, her academic career has allowed her to explore how constructed geographies shape the environment in which human identity is formed. Her research interests include issues of urbanization, earth democracy, behavioral economics, communalism and green development. She focuses on how these issues can influence productive urban dwellings that facilitate social agency. Her experiences range from independent research to community organization and advocacy, which have helped her develop a strong skillset and unique perspective. She appreciates direct intervention work, given her previous involvements in addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals and conducting ethnographic research while investigating sustainable consumer culture in Toronto neighborhoods. Most recently however, she explored the other side of interventions and ran as the youngest ever candidate for Toronto City Councillor. Through her campaign, she involved herself in the intricate processes required to set priorities through policy. Renee envisions a world that re-evaluates the importance of our relations not only to property, but to ourselves and others, and believes that looking to our physical surroundings is a good place to start.
