Peter Melens

Deputy Head, World Animal Health Information and Analysis Department, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), France
Peter is the deputy head of the world animal health information and analysis department at the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). He joined the organization in March 2019. In his current role, he keeps oversight of international reporting and analysis of animal health information on listed and emerging diseases from across the world, and works closely with partner organisations (WHO, FAO and others) in monitoring disease threats affecting animal and public health. A big part of the current job is also developing OIE-WAHIS, the new platform for recording country disease situations and information on veterinary services. The new platform will enable countries and stakeholders/partner organizations to access current and historic validated information, enabling policy decisions and research on animal and public health. Before joining OIE in Paris, he was the head of field delivery for APHA in Scotland from 2016 to 2019. Prior to that, he worked across the UK as a large animal practitioner for several years and then joined the UK Government Veterinary Service (Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA)/Defra) in 2005. Peter qualified as a doctor in veterinary medicine from the Rijks Universiteit Ghent, Belgium, in 1990.
