Noriko TSUYA is professor, Department of Economics, Keio University in Tokyo and was formerly a research fellow, East-West Center in Hawaii. She was also visiting professor at California Institute of Technology. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago with specialization in demography and social statistics/ quantitative methodology. Her research focuses on fertility and family change in Asia and developed countries. She is a member of the Science Council of Japan, chairing the subcommittee on population change and economy. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Population Association of Japan, as well as a member of several government committees, including the statistics committee of Cabinet Office, the Government of Japan, the social security commission of Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, and the research evaluation committee of National Institute of Population and Social Security Research. Her publications include: Marriage, Work, and Family Life in Comparative Perspective (with Larry L. Bumpass, University of Hawaii Press, 2004); Prudence and Pressure: Reproduction and Human Agency in Europe and Asia, 1700-1900 (with Wang Feng et al., MIT Press, 2010); and Jinko Gensho to Nihon Keizai: Rodo, Nenkin, Iryo-seido no Yukuye (Population Decline and Japanese Economy: The Prospects of Employment, Pension, and Medical Care) (with Yoshio Higuchi, Nihon Keizai Shimbun Shuppansha, 2009).
