Kofi ANNAN was the chairperson of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), president of the Global Humanitarian Forum, chair of the Africa Progress Panel initiative, and chair of the Prize Committee of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. He previously served as the seventh secretary-general of the United Nations (UN) from 1997 to 2006. In 2001, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace with the UN. He spent most of his career working for the UN, and he was the first secretary general to emerge from the ranks of United Nations staff. Mr. Annan studied at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi before enrolling at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he received a B.A. in economics. He continued his studies at the Institute for Advanced International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He was a Sloan Fellow from 1971 to 1972 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned an M.A. degree.
