Kachen Wongsathapornchai
Veterinary Epidemiologist, Food and Agriculture Organization, Thailand
Kachen Wongsathapornchai is a veterinarian. He oversees activities related to veterinary epidemiology capacity development in Asia and the Pacific, provides advices to governments on strategic planning for animal health and disease control, and is currently serving as the Regional Manager, ad interim, of FAO Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases. Previously, he worked as a veterinary epidemiologist at Thailand's Department of Livestock Development (DLD). While working at DLD, he had the opportunity to co-pioneer the establishment of the first Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians. He possesses several years of experience working at regional and international levels with various organisations, some of which include Animal Population Health Institute of Colorado State University, and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). While working for FAO, he was fielded as an expert to Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, and Myanmar; coordinated regional projects on emergency diseases such as pandemic influenza A(H1N1) and avian influenza A(H7N9); and supported animal health development programmes in member countries and regional organisations, such as ASEAN and SAARC. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, a Masters of Science and a Ph.D. specialised in veterinary epidemiology.
