General Manager, WDET Public Radio, Detroit, Michigan, United States
J. Mikel Ellcessor, general manager of WDET, Detroit, has spent the last twenty-five years developing new, diverse audiences for non-commercial media and not-for-profit arts organizations. Since he joined WDET in December 2008, WDET has executed a complete restructuring of its business model, reinvigorated its revenue and content areas and has established itself at the front of public radio's short list of major market, mainstream, multi-ethnic public radio stations. Mr. Ellcessor spent two years working on the design and launch of RadioMilwaukee, a hyperlocal multi-platofrm media service. RadioMilwaukee is an unduplicated music/community engagement hybrid designed to attract a younger, diverse audience to public service media. RadioMilwaukee launched in February 2007 and has already established itself as a vibrant entity in Milwaukee's music, social activism and regional development communities. From 1999-2006, Mr. Ellcessor was a senior manager at WNYC, New York Public Radio. As WNYC's senior director, programming operations and distribution he oversaw all broadcast, new media, multiplatform distribution and audience development efforts. From 1995-1999, he was the owner of Ellcessor Media and Consulting. During this time he helped organize the start-up of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Alliance, a regional arts marketing program designed to build community awareness, appreciation and participation in the arts and involved over 150 arts organizations.
