Assistant Researcher, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan

Haruka Kon is an assistant researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), in Hayama. Based in the Kansai Research Centre, she currently focuses on renewable energy and hydrogen station feasibility studies. With a unique academic bridge between Arctic environmental risks and international policy, Haruka is dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions across Asia. Her research specialized in climate change and the rights of Indigenous peoples in Arctic regions like Yakutia, particularly regarding permafrost degradation. Prior to joining IGES, Haruka served as a Japanese language and culture teacher working at local language school in Russia both in-person and online for four years. Her technical background is complemented by a bachelor’s degree centered on international relations, American diplomacy, and multicultural symbiosis. Haruka holds a master’s degree in ecology and nature management from Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Russia.
