Hal Varian

Chief Economist, Google Inc., Mountainview, California; on leave from the University of California-Berkeley, School of Information (invited)

Hal Varian is the chief economist at Google. He began as a consultant and was involved in many aspects of the company, including auction design, econometric analysis, finance, corporate strategy and public policy. He is dean and emeritus professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in three departments: business, economics, and information management. He specializes in microeconomics and information economics. Dr. Varian is a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Econometric Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author of Intermediate Microeconomics, Microeconomic Analysis, and has co-authored Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy, and The Economics of Information Technology: An Introduction. He has a S.B. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD. in economics from UC Berkeley. He has also been awarded two honorary doctorates from the University of Oulu, Finland and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.
