Frank Mehring

Frank Mehring is a professor and chair of American studies at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He teaches 20th and 21st century visual culture and music, theories of popular culture with a focus on processes of cultural translation between European, Chinese and American contexts. In 2012, he received the biennial Rob Kroes Award from the European Association for American Studies for his monograph The Democratic Gap: Transcultural Confrontations of German Immigrants and the Promise of Democracy (Winter, 2014). His recent research projects focused on the intersection of music and politics in books, anthologies and special guest-edited journals including The Soundtrack of Liberation (2015), Sound and Vision (2018), The Politics and Cultures of Liberation (2018), Forging the American Century (2019), Islamophobia and Inter/Multimedial Dissensus (2020). He has a keen interest in public engagement and outreach, has organized concerts/exhibitions on the Marshal Plan and liberation songs, and presented his work on public national radio and television. He is a Fellow of Salzburg Global Seminar.
