Elaine Hsiao is an interdisciplinary legal scholar, specializing in transboundary conservation areas, conflict, and environmental peace building. Her research integrates critical legal geography and political ecology with security, peace, and conflict studies in the context of cross-border conservation. She has helped provide legal frameworks for transboundary parks for peace, developed a service-learning expedition in Parque International La Amistad, co-directed/ produced a documentary film for "Transcending Boundaries," consulted on cross-border protected areas publications and projects, and passed resolutions on the environment, peace, and conflict at IUCN and WILD Congresses. Ms. Hsiao has represented the Small Island Developing State and the Union of Comoros at the United Nations on climate change and environmental issues. She has also received a Fulbright research grant to study transboundary conservation in Uganda (2010-2011) and sits on the Steering Committee of the World Commission on Protected Areas. She is currently a Liu scholar and Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Columbia's Institute for Resources, Environment & Sustainability and a Fellow, specializing in Protected Areas, at the Global Center for Environmental Legal Studies. Ms. Hsiao holds a J.D. and LL.M. in international and environmental law from Pace Law School and is an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium.
