Courtney ERWIN is chief of staff and director of programs at the Cordoba Initiative, a multi-national and multi-religious NGO committed to improving engagement between the Muslim world and the West. As chief of staff to the chairman of the organization she assists in the day-to-day operations, strategic management of the Initiative, and assists in managing programmatic work, specifically the Shariah Index Project and legislative program in Washington, DC. Prior to joining the Initiative, Ms. Erwin worked at the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington as their coordinator for Religious Freedom. While at the Public Interest Law Group, she worked on human rights and public interest litigation, including torture and detention cases. She has written about religious minority-majority identities and the law (public international and Shari’a) in Muslim-majority countries. Ms. Erwin received a B.S. in Muslim–Christian Understanding from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service; an M.A. in Islamic studies from McGill University’s Institute of Islamic Studies, and a J.D. in international law and mediation from Seattle University School of Law.
