Arthur Schmidt (Speaker) is chairman and director of the F.B. Heron Foundation and a member of the Institute for Philanthropy and of APVA-Preservation Virginia. He was also the founder and president of GuideStar International (GSI). GSI, a UK-registered charity, illuminates the work of the world’s nonprofit organizations through online repositories of reports about organizations in each country. Mr. Schmidt founded GuideStar UK in 2003 and GuideStar US, which he led for eight years, in 1994. He also serves as the president of the US “Friends” Organization for New Philanthropy Capital and as a member of the International Committee of Independent Sector. He was named US Nonprofit Executive of the Year by The Nonprofit Times in 1999 and, in 2001, he was named one of six visionary leaders in philanthropy by Time Magazine. Mr. Schmidt is a graduate of Princeton University and Stanford’s Graduate Schools of Business and Education. He attended the Salzburg Global Seminar philanthropy meeting, The Future of Philanthropy, in 2006 and the Salzburg Initiative on Optimizing Institutional Philanthropy in 2008.
