Aparna Tandon serves as senior program leader for the First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis (FAR) program at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), in Rome. Aparna provides strategic guidance to intergovernmental agencies, governments, and cultural institutions, offering expertise in assessing the costs of post-crisis heritage recovery and in investing in anticipatory action. Her work leverages heritage protection to advance disaster resilience, climate action, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. Aparna is the principal author of the First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis Handbook and Toolkit—translated into more than 16 languages—and the lead author of the UNESCO–ICCROM guide on Emergency Evacuation of Heritage Collections. An internationally recognized expert in the conservation and risk management of cultural heritage, with over 25 years of experience in more than 130 countries, Aparna has led large-scale conservation projects and innovative training programs for movable, built, archaeological, intangible, audiovisual, and digital heritage, strengthening national systems and building capacity to safeguard these resources in the face of disasters, armed conflict, and climate change. She has successfully managed multi-donor, multi-partner projects and translated international heritage policies into practical strategies that empower professionals and reinforce community resilience. Aparna designed and led flagship initiatives such as the Alliance for Cultural First Aid, Peace, and Resilience and READY – Resilience for Heritage in the Face of Disasters, Climate Risks and Complex Emergencies. She has played a pivotal role in launching ICCROM’s global efforts in audiovisual heritage conservation and sustaining digital heritage.
