Amira el-Azhary Sonbol

Amira EL-AZHARY SONBOL is a professor of Islamic history, law and society at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, and Head of the International Affairs Program at Qatar University. She teaches courses on the history of modern Egypt, women and law, and Islamic civilization, and her main research focus is in the field of women and gender, Islamic history, Islamic law, the history of Egypt, and the ethics of war. Dr. Sonbol is also the editor-in-chief of HAWWA: Journal of the Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World, and has published numerous articles and books, including Beyond the Exotic: Women’s Histories in Islamic Societies (2005) and Women of the Jordan: Islam, Labor, and the Law (2003). Dr. Sonbol holds an M.A. from the American University in Cairo and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University.
