Members of the Education Policymakers Network publish The Salzburg Statement In Support Of The International Day of Play on the world’s first International Day of Play

The Salzburg Statement In Support Of The International Day of Play was prepared by members of the Education Policymakers Network during their third in-person meeting in Salzburg in May 2023 to support the vision of the International Day of Play and highlight the importance of play in children’s daily lives.

The Education Policymakers Network was designed to connect policymakers from different countries to work, learn, and innovate together. The network was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to help support and sustain education transformation around the need to develop a breadth of skills – cognitive, creative, physical, social, and emotional – in young and school-aged learners. At different points, the network returned to the importance of "play" in learning and more broadly for childhood development.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child confirms the right to play as a universal right for children. Often overlooked, play is invaluable in life, leisure, and enterprise. June 11th, 2024 will now be the world‘s first International Day of Play and will provide an opportunity to share expertise, focus resources and magnify communication and advocacy activity. The Education Policymakers Network invites you to make the UN International Day of Play special by visiting www.internationaldayofplay.org.

The International Day of Play campaign is coordinated by a network of organizations, initiated by the LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation, a valued partner of Salzburg Global Seminar’s education programs, including the Education Policymakers Network.
