Houston artist transforms houses into arts and community centers

Salzburg Global Fellow Rick Lowe has been awarded a $625,000 grant through the MacArthur Foundation's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. Since 1993, Lowe has spearheaded Project Row Houses (PRH), which transforms dilapidated houses into arts and community centers.

In an interview with Art in America, Lowe said, “PRH allowed me to merge two things that have always been personally valuable, which is community activism and empowerment and art. It allows those things to come together very naturally; it’s not forced.”

Lowe attended the 2007 session entitled "Cultural Institutions without Walls: New Models of Arts - Community Interaction."
