A just energy transition must align energy and economic sustainability with climate, development, and environmental justice needs
There is an emerging consensus on the need to “transition away from fossil fuels”, as highlighted in the historic agreement by countries at COP28 . This transition is driven not only by a desire to tackle the climate crisis, but also by concerns around the geopolitical risks, economic costs, and health and environmental impacts of continued oil and gas dependency. Additionally, clean energy markets present growing economic opportunities. Navigating this path in a just, orderly, and equitable manner remains a challenge as countries seek to manage trade-offs and balance short- and long-term objectives.
The “Policy Dialogue for Just Energy Transitions: Identifying Pathways to Prosperity Post Fossil Fuels” was held from September 8 to 12, 2024 at Salzburg Global. This program convened policy and decision-makers from fossil fuel producing countries alongside leading researchers, business leaders, and representatives from international organizations. They shared and discussed evidence-based approaches to the transition from carbon-intensive systems to inclusive, equitable, and sustainable systems.
Emerging from the discussions at the program, the key findings showcase the challenges and windows of opportunity of a just energy transition. The publication also includes further resources to briefs commissioned by Climate Strategies; these include an international briefing and in-country briefings on five specific country contexts.
