From November 13 to 15, 2024, Fellows of Salzburg Global’s Public Policy New Voices Europe program embarked on a field visit to Brussels. Supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and in partnership with organizations including The Walt Disney Company, The LEGO Group, and Squire Patton Boggs, the visit offered an immersive experience in European policymaking and advocacy.
Bringing together Fellows from all three cohorts of the Public Policy New Voices Europe program, this three-day journey combined insightful sessions, cultural highlights, and meaningful networking opportunities. The agenda was crafted to provide Fellows with a comprehensive understanding of the EU’s policy ecosystem while encouraging reflection on their roles as public policy advocates.
Day 1: Setting the Stage
The visit began with a preparatory lunch meeting, where Fellows connected across cohorts, set expectations, and shared aspirations for the trip.
Later, the Fellows delved into critical conversations during a session with the Migration Policy Group (MPG). This discussion, led by Alexander Wolffhardt, addressed structural racism in Europe, focusing on systemic inequalities and advocacy strategies to tackle them.
The day concluded with a cultural touch, as the Fellows attended the Changemakers Art Exhibition at the European Parliament. The exhibition celebrated innovative approaches to societal issues, providing inspiration and fresh perspectives on the intersections of art and policy.
Day 2: A Deep Dive into Policy
The second day began with a session hosted by the European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD), led by head of policy Konstantina Leventi. This session explored EU-level disability advocacy, with discussions on how recent elections shaped inclusion and accessibility strategies. Fellows gained valuable insights into policymaking for marginalized communities.
Afterwards, FTI Consulting and The LEGO Group hosted an interactive session where Fellows explored the intersection of public affairs, strategic communication, and corporate contributions to policy development. The LEGO Group shared its impactful government relations strategy, providing Fellows with actionable insights into public-private collaboration.
One participant reflected, “Engaging with The LEGO Group and FTI Consulting demonstrated how strategic communication can shape impactful policy outcomes. These examples will influence how I approach advocacy moving forward.” Over lunch, Fellows had further opportunities to exchange ideas and network informally with speakers and peers.
The afternoon session, led by Christina Economides, Senior Policy Advisor with Squire Patton Boggs, offered a comprehensive overview of EU institutions and decision-making processes. Christina’s detailed insights into the roles of key institutions left Fellows better equipped to navigate the complexities of European governance.
Later, the Policy Café provided a dynamic forum for discussion. Fellows hosted conversations on pressing topics, including extremism, communication, and stakeholder engagement in policy development. These collaborative discussions fostered actionable solutions and strengthened connections among participants.
The day closed with a networking reception hosted by Squire Patton Boggs. Bringing together past and present Salzburg Global Fellows, this event was a highlight, enabling cross-generational idea exchange and professional growth.
Day 3: Reflection and Action
The final day began with a tour of the European Parliament, including a visit to the iconic Hemicycle. This behind-the-scenes experience offered a closer look at the workings of one of the EU’s most significant institutions, reinforcing Fellows’ understanding of how policies are debated and enacted.
The journey concluded with a debrief session at the Brussels office of The Walt Disney Company, where Fellows reflected on their learnings and discussed ways to implement their new insights into their own advocacy work.
The Impact of the Journey
This field visit left a mark on the Fellows, equipping them with practical tools and broader perspectives to influence policy in their respective contexts. As one Fellow put it: “This visit deepened my understanding of EU policymaking and strengthened my ability to navigate regulatory environments. Meeting stakeholders and engaging in discussions provided invaluable insights into how diverse voices can shape impactful policy.”
Faye Hobson, director of culture programs at Salzburg Global, remarked, “Brussels offered our Fellows a chance to engage directly with the people and processes shaping European policy. These connections and insights will undoubtedly enrich their contributions to public policy across Europe.”
By exploring key policy issues, meeting influential leaders, and connecting with diverse stakeholders, the Fellows’ journey in Brussels highlighted the power of dialogue, collaboration, and inclusivity in shaping a better future.
