In January 2026, Schloss Leopoldskron welcomed Michael Pohn as the new General Manager. In this interview, Michael maps out his visions and goals for the future of Schloss Leopoldskron.

Gabriela Nahm, Advancement and Engagement Associate: What drew you to Schloss Leopoldskron, and how do you understand its role within Salzburg Global’s broader mission?

Michael Pohn, General Manager, Schloss Leopoldskron: What drew me to Schloss Leopoldskron was the unique combination of history, purpose, people, and place. It is not simply a historic property, but a place where perspectives meet — where the setting itself invites reflection and meaningful exchange.

At its core, Salzburg Global’s mission is about bringing people together, and the Schloss is where those conversations come to life. It is both the physical home of the organization and a source of inspiration, the heart of Salzburg Global.

On a personal level, this role feels like a full-circle moment. Having grown up nearby, I spent time on the grounds without ever stepping inside the Schloss. The first time I entered, I was struck by a sense of awe and possibility.

As General Manager, I see my role as ensuring that the environment fully supports the mission: through hospitality, professionalism, and a spirit of openness that makes every guest feel both welcome and inspired. The Schloss is not just a venue; it is an experience that stays with people long after they leave.

GN: Schloss Leopoldskron is both a historic landmark and a working social enterprise. How do you balance preservation, guest experience, and financial sustainability in your vision for the Schloss?

MP: For me, balance begins with recognizing that these elements are not in competition; rather, they strengthen one another.

Preserving the historic character of the Schloss is essential, and that requires careful stewardship. Any updates we make must respect the building’s heritage while also ensuring that it continues to meet the needs of today and the future.

At the same time, the guest experience must remain at the heart of everything we do. True hospitality goes beyond the physical setting: It is about creating memorable moments and an emotional connection for every guest who comes through our doors.

Financial sustainability is equally critical, as it ensures the long-term future of the Schloss and its ability to support Salzburg Global’s mission. This means building strong partnerships, diversifying revenue streams, and planning strategically for the years ahead.

Achieving this balance is an ongoing process — one that requires care, intention, and a long-term perspective.

GN: As you look ahead three to five years, what ambitions do you have for the Schloss — and what would success look like for you?

MP: In the years ahead, I would like to further strengthen the human side of the guest experience to ensure that our service is remembered just as vividly as the setting.

Today, many guests are understandably focused on the beauty of the Schloss itself. But what I would like to see more of is feedback that speaks to how people felt during their stay. They might remember the warmth of the welcome, the attentiveness of our team, and the sense of connection they experienced here, in addition to the beauty of the palace.

Today, an important step towards that goal is investing in our team. If we can create an environment where staff feel supported, motivated, and proud to be part of the Schloss, that will naturally translate into a stronger guest experience. Reducing staff turnover and building a committed, engaged team will be a key measure of success.

GN: Many of our supporters care deeply about the legacy and future of Schloss Leopoldskron. What would you want them to know about how you plan to steward this extraordinary place?

MP: Schloss Leopoldskron is not only a beautiful property; it is a place with a profound legacy and purpose.

Stewarding a place like this requires both deep respect for its history and a clear vision for its future. My commitment is to preserve and honor the Schloss’s historic character while ensuring that it remains vibrant, relevant, and actively used in service of Salzburg Global’s mission.

I want our supporters to feel confident that their contributions have a visible and lasting impact. Their support helps protect this extraordinary place while also enabling it to continue as a space for learning, dialogue, and international exchange.

Ultimately, I hope they see that they are sustaining something truly special: a place that not only endures but continues to inspire and bring people together across generations.
