Julie is a founding leader of the CLAHRC NWL program which was established in 2008 to investigate how to translate evidence into practice to improve patient care and outcomes, researching the use of quality improvement approaches to achieve this goal. Program outputs include high impact publications on the use of Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles (BMJ Q&S 2013 and 2014) and the connection between patient experience, safety and outcomes (BMJ Open 2013). In 2011 Julie was awarded a prestigious Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellowship. Within this post-doctoral research program Julie explored the use of quality improvement methods in UK, Australia and America, and investigated different scientific paradigms influencing improvement research and practice. Her conclusions advocate the need to adopt a pragmatist application of scientific methods to solve societal problems, and draws on her PhD studies in chemistry and drug development.
