OVERVIEW

Armed conflicts, natural catastrophes, and other humanitarian crises cause unimaginable suffering to millions of children all over the world. Their potential to develop into healthy, happy adults is threatened by anxiety, sadness, and other stress-related issues. Their social development, physical health, and mental health can all suffer long-term effects from violence and exposure to trauma. The experiences of the last few years have exposed many more children to the effects of trauma, irrespsective of whether they are growing up in contexts of crisis and conflict. School systems around the world are having to develop support programs to help their students cope with this.

The fifteenth virtual meeting of the Education Policymakers Network explored learnings and insights from humanitarian contexts that might help education systems develop MHPSS support programs and the role that breadth of skills work can play within these.

The virtual network meeting heard from two guest speakers: Ashley Nemiro is the Executive Director of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Collaborative and Oula Abu-Amsha is the a Senior Consultant at Center for Learning in Practice, Switzerland and will talk on PSS.

The Education Policymakers Network connects policymakers from different countries to work, learn and innovate together. Launched in 2021, the network helps support and sustain education reform around the need to develop a breadth of skills – cognitive, creative, physical, social and emotional – in young learners.

Each of the virtual network meetings hear from a guest speaker on a specific topic and then look at the evidence of impact and existing policies around a specific reform idea.

An insights report is generated from each meeting that can be shared across the network. The meetings are also being recorded so that they can act as a resource for the members after they took place.

This virtual network meeting is only open to participants in the Education Policymakers Network.
