Hyeyoung Shin

PhD Candidate, National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Otago, New Zealand

Hyeyoung Shin is a PhD candidate at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Her interest lies in the peace practised by those marginalised in society and its potential for conflict transformation.

She has been exploring the everyday peace of migrant workers in South Korea since late 2021. Prior to embarking on her PhD journey, she was engaged in civil society organisations for senior citizens and persons with disabilities in South Korea. Additionally, she was involved in development projects, collaborating with people from the Philippines, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, and notably, worked based in Cambodia for nearly eight years.

Hyeyoung holds a bachelor's degree in Family Welfare from Sangmyeong University, South Korea, and a master's degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Otago, which she earned through her research on Korean CSOs' approach to capacity-building in Cambodia.
