Goodwin Liu

Goodwin Liu is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. Before joining the court in 2011, Justice Liu was Professor of Law and Associate Dean at the UC Berkeley School of Law. His primary areas of expertise are constitutional law, criminal law, and diversity in the legal profession. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Justice Liu earned a biology degree at Stanford, a masters degree in philosophy and physiology at Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, and a law degree at Yale. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and worked in the litigation practice of O'Melveny & Myers. Justice Liu is an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Law Institute. He continues to teach constitutional law at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, and Columbia Law School.
