Markus Diethelm is the Group General Counsel and member of the Group Executive Board of UBS AG. He joined UBS in September 2008. Markus Diethelm started his career in Switzerland in 1983 with the Zurich law firm of Bär & Karrer. Subsequently he moved to the United States where he joined the New York law firms of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, as a foreign associate, from 1988-1989 and Shearman & Sterling, as a regular associate and member of its merger and acquisition team, from 1989-1992. In 1992 he joined the US law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, operating out of Brussels and then Paris, where he specialized in international corporate matters and securities transactions. In 1998 Markus became the General Counsel of Swiss Re and joined the Swiss Re Group Executive Board in 2007. Markus is a a Swiss citizen, and he graduated from the University of Zurich law school (lic.iur.) in 1983. In the United States, he obtained advanced degrees from Stanford University law school including a masters' degree in 1988 and a PhD degree in 1992. He is qualified as attorney-at-law in the State of New York as well as in Switzerland.
