Togo Uchida

Director, ICLEI Japan, Japan

Togo Uchida is the director of ICLEI Japan. Born in the UK and grew up in Melbourne and Tokyo, Togo started his career at Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) working on donor coordination and aid policies. Gradually, his interest shifted to environmental policies and climate change and he spent over eight years in Thailand and Cambodia as Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project formulation adviser on climate change and environment sector. The sector included water supply and sanitation, solid waste, environmental management, climate finance and REDD+ project. After serving one year at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) as programme manager for promoting SDGs in cities in ASEAN countries, Togo assumed his current position with ICLEI from 1 July 2018. He is responsible for running the office representing the 21 members of leading cities and regions in Japan, accounting for approximately 30% of Japanese population. With his experience on project management and the development of technical and financial projects for urban environmental infrastructure and climate change sector, he is now supporting cities and regions in Japan in their pursuit of sustainability.
